10 Days in Peru Itinerary 2025: The Ultimate Machu Picchu Route (Updated)

Peru is the culinary capital of South America and home to the Lost City of the Incas. This updated Peru route planner 2025 ensures you stand at the classic photo spot without passing out.

Before You Go: The New Ticket Rules

In 2025, Machu Picchu tickets are stricter than ever. You cannot just "roam freely." You must choose a Circuit when buying:

  • Circuit 1: Upper terrace only (Panormaic view, no ruins).
  • Circuit 2: The classic route (View + Ruins). *Most Recommended*.
  • Circuit 3: Royals sector (Lower part only).

Tickets sell out 2-3 months in advance. Do not fly to Peru without them.

Days 1-2: Lima (The Food Capital)

Start at sea level to ease into the trip. Lima is arguably the best food city in the world.

Day 1: Miraflores & Barranco

Stay in Miraflores. Walk the MalecΓ³n (cliff-top park) overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon, explore the bohemian art district of Barranco, famous for its colorful murals and the Bridge of Sighs.

Day 2: Historical Center & Ceviche

Visit the Plaza Mayor and the Catacombs of San Francisco. For lunch, you must eat Ceviche (raw fish cured in lime). Try it at La Mar or Punto Azul.

Days 3-5: Cusco & The Sacred Valley (Acclimatization)

Fly to Cusco. Prepare for the altitude (3,400m). Move slowly.

Day 3: Cusco City

Take it easy. Drink Coca Tea (legal and ubiquitous here). Visit the Plaza de Armas and the San Pedro Market to see local life. Visit the 12-Angled Stone.

Day 4: The Sacred Valley (Pisac & Ollantaytambo)

Hire a driver or take a tour to the lower-altitude Sacred Valley. Visit the massive ruins of Pisac and the fortress of Ollantaytambo. This is where you catch the train to Machu Picchu.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes

Take the scenic Vistadome Train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). The train has glass ceilings to see the Andes. Sleep here to be the first at the ruins tomorrow.

Day 6: Machu Picchu (The Wonder)

The highlight of the trip.

The Morning Entrance

Take the bus up at 5:30 AM. Enter with your Circuit 2 ticket. Watch the sun clear the mist over the Huayna Picchu peak. It is spiritual, massive, and breathtaking.

Note: There are no toilets inside the ruins. Go before you enter.

Days 7-10: Rainbow Mountain & Adventure

Return to Cusco and tackle the high-altitude challenges.

Day 7: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

This is a challenge. You will hike up to 5,200 meters. The striped mineral mountain is stunning, but the air is thin. Warning: Only do this if you feel fully acclimatized.

Day 8: Humantay Lake

Another high-altitude hike to a turquoise glacial lake. The contrast of the blue water against the white Salkantay glacier is incredible.

Day 9-10: Return to Lima

Fly back to Lima for a final fine-dining dinner (maybe at Central, voted #1 in the world) before flying home.

Peruvian Food Guide: Unique Flavors

  1. Lomo Saltado: Stir-fried beef with onions, tomatoes, and french fries. A mix of Peruvian and Chinese influence.
  2. Cuy (Guinea Pig): Yes, they eat it roasted. It tastes like dark chicken meat. Try it in Cusco if you are brave.
  3. Pisco Sour: The national cocktail made with Pisco brandy, lime, egg white, and bitters.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ͺ Critical Ticket Alert!

We cannot stress this enough: Machu Picchu tickets for Circuit 2 (The Classic View) sell out months in advance. You cannot buy them at the gate. Also, the Train to Machu Picchu has limited seats. Secure your entry and transport below.
