Before You Go: The Hallstatt Warning

Hallstatt is tiny and overwhelmed by tourists. Do not drive there. Parking is impossible. The best way is to take the train + ferry combo, or a guided day trip from Salzburg. Respect the locals; signs asking for "Quiet" are real.

Days 1-3: Vienna (The Imperial Capital)

Start in the city of music, coffee houses, and emperors.

Day 1: St. Stephen's & The Hofburg

Walk to St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) in the city center. Then, explore the Hofburg Palace, the former winter residence of the Habsburgs. Visit the Sisi Museum to learn about the tragic empress.

Day 2: Schönbrunn Palace

Take the U-Bahn to Schönbrunn Palace (the summer residence). It is Austria's Versailles. Walk up the hill to the Gloriette for a view over the city. Tip: The gardens are free, but the palace tour requires a ticket.

Day 3: Art & Opera

Visit the Belvedere Palace to see Gustav Klimt's famous painting "The Kiss." In the evening, attend a performance at the Vienna State Opera. You can get "Standing Room" tickets for just a few Euros if you queue early.

Days 4-5: Salzburg (The Sound of Music)

Take the Railjet train (2.5 hours) to Salzburg. It is the birthplace of Mozart.

Day 4: Hohensalzburg Fortress

Take the funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. It dominates the skyline. Walk down into the Old Town (Altstadt) and visit Mozart’s Birthplace on Getreidegasse street.

Day 5: Mirabell Gardens

Fans of the movie "The Sound of Music" must visit Mirabell Gardens (where they sang "Do-Re-Mi"). It is beautiful and free.

Day 6: Hallstatt (The Fairytale Village)

This is the reason many travel to Austria.

The Classic Viewpoint

Take a day trip to Hallstatt. Walk to the famous "Classic Village Viewpoint" north of the town. Visit the Bone House (Beinhaus) in the chapel, where painted skulls are displayed (space is limited in the cemetery!).

Salt Mine

Take the funicular up to the world's oldest Salt Mine. The view from the "Skywalk" platform hovering over the lake is breathtaking.

Day 7: Return to Vienna

Take the train back to Vienna for your flight home. Stop for one last coffee.

Austrian Food Guide: Coffee Culture

  1. Wiener Schnitzel: Veal cutlet, breaded and fried. It must be bigger than the plate.
  2. Sachertorte: A dense chocolate cake with apricot jam, invented at Hotel Sacher.
  3. Apfelstrudel: Apple strudel served warm with vanilla sauce.

🇦🇹 Plan Your Day Trip

Getting to Hallstatt by public transport involves multiple changes (train + ferry). It can be stressful. We recommend booking a Guided Day Trip from Vienna or Salzburg to handle the logistics for you. Also, Schönbrunn Palace tickets have time slots. Book below.
